Crypto dominated a much quieter weekend instruction mix

Data window: 1 July 2026 to 31 August 2026

Abstract

Crypto formed most weekend entry activity in August, while average weekend-day activity was much lower than the weekday average. A share of a quieter period and the activity level of that period answer different questions.12345

Crypto accounted for 67.7% of weekend entry instructions in August 2026, versus 8.7% on weekdays; average weekend-day entry activity was 13.4% of the weekday average.

The two bars use different denominators: all weekday entry instructions and all weekend entry instructions. Crypto’s much larger weekend share describes the mix within that period. It does not, by itself, establish more crypto activity on a weekend day than on a weekday.

The day-level context matters. Average weekend-day entry activity was only a fraction of the weekday average in the same released data. A category can dominate a smaller whole while contributing much less activity than its share alone might suggest.

A competing explanation for the mix is the different operating schedules of the underlying markets. The observation is compatible with that explanation, but this descriptive comparison does not test it. Instructions can also arrive while an underlying market is closed.

For monitoring, retain both the day-type denominator and an activity comparison. Do not treat an unchanged overall weekday pattern as a reliable description of weekend traffic.

These are source-calendar day types. The source time zone is unconfirmed, so this finding does not establish a precise session boundary. The original weekend breakdown includes the other asset classes.

Limitations and data

Numbered notes are referenced from the text. Each states what a figure or series does not establish.

  1. The figure describes August alone; July belongs to the source release’s comparison window, but no July weekend-share observation is plotted here.

  2. July comparisons use the August release’s consistent eligibility rules. They can differ from the separately published July bulletin. These are source-calendar months; the source time zone is unconfirmed.

  3. A high share of weekend activity does not imply a high weekend activity level.

  4. Day types follow the unconfirmed source clock. Instructions can arrive when a market is closed.

  5. execution or liquidity (weekend instructions can arrive while the underlying market is not trading normally)
